Sam McGurk unbeaten in British Youth round
SAM McGURK went through the card unbeaten, to win the 150/125cc class of Round Two of the British Youth Championship at the Eddie Wright Raceway yesterday (Sunday).
The only time that McGurk looked likely to drop a point was to elder brother Harry in Heat 3. Harry led for almost the entire race, but drifted perilously wide coming off the final corner, and Sam charged through to snatch the victory.
Harry would have been his brother’s main competition, but finished last in Heat 6 due to machinery problems and therefore missed out on the final by a single point.
Sam McGurk (12), Archie Freeman (11), Corban Pavitt (10) and Luke Harrison (9) were the qualifiers for the final race. Local lad Harrison fell and was excluded while chasing Pavitt in Heat 9, but won his other three qualifying races and edged out fellow nine-pointer Bailey Fellows on the account of three heats wins to one.
In the final, McGurk led from Harrison, when Pavitt misjudged an overtaking move on Harrison at the start of the third lap, leading to both riders coming crashing down. In the re-run, with Pavitt excluded, McGurk led all the way from Freeman and Harrison, to complete a packed afternoon of speedway.
