SCUNTHORPE SPEEDWAY will proudly stage one of its largest-ever meetings on Sunday afternoon (3pm), when the Eddie Wright Raceway plays host to the Championship League Riders’ Championship.

The prestigious competition dates right back to 1968, when Middlesbrough’s Graham Plant won the British League Division Two Riders’ Championship at Hackney.

The 2025 season will represent the first time that the competition has been held in the North Lincolnshire town, while no Scunthorpe rider has ever won the event – something home representatives Steve Worrall and Jake Allen will be looking to put right.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Last week, the Eddie Wright Raceway celebrated its 20th anniversary since our first-ever meeting took place (on March 27, 2005). It doesn’t seem like 20 years since we opened, but I can’t think of a better way of celebrating it than with the staging of the Championship League Riders’ Championship at Scunthorpe.

“It’s a huge event that will attract supporters from across the country. The CLRC is normally held towards the end of the season, but for this year, we’ve switched to the start of the season. I think it’s a good move. The riders are fit and healthy at this time of year, plus rider availability is much easier.

“The other big plus is that we can publicise the winner for the rest of the season – it can become a big thing when the CLRC champion visits the away tracks!

“Steve and Jake will be very keen to provide a home winner. But every rider in the line-up is a heat-leader in the Cab Direct Championship and capable of winning the event.

“There are 22 races, including the semi and the final, and it’s going to be a great afternoon of speedway. We’re proud of our racetrack and there’s going to be plenty of thrilling action.”
