Scorpions miss out after a humdinger

HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions just missed out, after a 44-46 home defeat to the Redcar Bears at the Eddie Wright Raceway yesterday evening (Easter Monday).
In a complete humdinger of a meeting, the lead changed hands on no fewer than five occasions, with Redcar pinching the verdict after a 5-1 from Jason Garrity and Ben Barker in Heat 15.
The referee declared that Barker had just pipped home skipper Michael Palm Toft for second place after the two riders flashed together across the finishing line.
Scorpions’ team manager Dave Peet said: “It was one of those meetings, which just got away from us.
“Josh Auty found himself brought down in Heat 11. He carried on in the meeting after that, and got second in the re-run, when the adrenalin was still pumping. But he wasn’t quite right and I think that showed when he finished last in Heat 13. Hopefully his wrist will be OK.
“Lewis Kerr had a really good meeting, but he had a problem with his primary chain in Heat 15. When he came back into the pits, three rungs were solid.
“And I think everyone can see our problems at reserve, since Fritz Wallner was injured. Jan Graversen was another caught up in the crash in Heat 11, and he did come good for us in Heat 14, combining for a 5-1 with Michael Palm Toft, but we are being outscored at reserve on a regular basis.
“It’s not all doom and gloom. Carl Wilkinson, for example, had another really solid home meeting, and he was in my thoughts when it came to Heat 15.
“We did have some bad luck. I don’t want for it to sound like a list of excuses, though, because Redcar came here to do a job and they did it, while we weren’t quite good enough.”
