Depleted Scorpions go down at Newcastle
NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS 60 SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 33 (PREMIER LEAGUE)
DEPLETED FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, supported by Henderson Insurance, suffered a 33-60 Premier League defeat at Newcastle yesterday evening (Sunday).
The Scorpions used rider replacement for the injured Josh Auty, and were also without both reserves, with Nike Lunna ruled out through illness and Ben Wilson sidelined after pulling his back. Arthur Sissis and Rafal Konopka came in as guests for Scunthorpe.
Theo Pijper was the pick of the Scorpions on show, and scored 14 points, including a win as a tactical ride in Heat 7.
The Scorpions kept matters relatively close for most of the meeting, and were only 11 points in arrears with five races to go, but the Diamonds then outscored their visitors by 23-7 from Heat 11 onwards.
Scorpions’ team manager Dave Peet said: “The one positive is that we rode much better at Newcastle this time around than in the cup match a few weeks ago. Theo Pijper had a good night.
“Newcastle are strong around their home track, while it didn’t help us that we were without both our usual reserves, although both Arthur Sissis and Rafal Konopka both tried hard.
“It could have been closer, because we threw away quite a few points. Ryan Douglas fell once and Carl Wilkinson twice, and Wilko was leading Heat 14 when he came down.”
