Super Swede Anders Mellgren Is Scorpions’ New No 1
22-YEAR OLD Swede Anders Mellgren has become the third signing for the Scunthorpe Scorpions for the 2014 season – and will start the season riding at No 1 for the club.
He joins Josh Auty and Ryan Douglas as confirmed starters for next season.
Mellgren is a former 80cc Swedish Champion (in 2006 and 2007), and finished second in the 2012 Premier League Riders’ Championship at Sheffield. He started his British career at Newport in 2010, and has spent the last two seasons riding for Rye House, his parent club.
His official Green Sheet Average for team building purposes is 7.33.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “I’m delighted that Anders is riding for us next season. I see this as a huge step towards us building a very competitive side in 2014.
“My thanks go to Rye House promoter Len Silver for his help. Once we found out that Rye were not planning to use Anders, we moved in quickly for him.
“He’s a young rider who has already made a great deal of progress in the sport, but who can still progress a great deal further.
“Anders is always a tall scorer around the Eddie Wright Raceway, but he’s good around the tighter tracks as well. He can fly around a wide-open track like Scunthorpe, and also around a tight track like Rye House. He’s good around anywhere.
“Anders is a quality act and will start as our No 1. He will form part of a powerful spearhead for the Scorpions.”
Godfrey is convinced that Scunthorpe will enjoy a successful season in 2014, as they look to regain the Premier League championship they won in 2012.
He added: “The last week has been a bit stressful, but the jigsaw is starting to fall into place. I’ve got our 1-7 for next season largely sorted out. I’m just waiting on confirmation on one rider.
“It’s going to be a very solid side and Ryan Douglas will be starting the season at reserve for us.
“It may only be November, but I’m already getting excited by our prospects. We do have a master plan in place as we look to win back the Premier League title.”
