REDCAR BEARS 63 SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 27 (LEAGUE CUP)
FLUID-AIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions suffered a heavy 27-63 defeat in a League Cup clash at Redcar last night (Thursday), on a night when nothing went right for the visitors.
Scorpions’ No 1 Swede Anders Mellgren crashed out of the meeting in the opening race, sustaining back-related injuries.
Scunthorpe then suffered a number of exclusions and engine problems. Heat 8 summarised Scunthorpe’s luck, as a potential 8-1 swung to a 5-1 the other way, after a highly debatable exclusion for Tactical Ride Ryan Douglas.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It was just one of those nights for us. I think we possibly have used up all our bad luck for the entire season in one night.
“What could go wrong went wrong, from having our No 1 crash out of the meeting in the opening race, to a number of engine problems, while every decision seemed to go against us as well.
“Ryan Douglas arrived here jet-lagged, following his flight from Australia. I couldn’t believe the amount of bad luck he had. I totalled it up and I reckon he could have scored around 15 points, without his problems.
“You name it, it happened to Ryan. He lost his chain; lost a mudguard; he was excluded from races and so on. But he did show the massive potential he has for this year.
“David Howe again got better with every race – it’s not going to be long until he’s back to his best.
“Matt Williamson had a super night; four points is a great return in only his second meeting at this level.
“I realise anyone who looks at the final score is going to think it was a complete stuffing, but that doesn’t reflect the effort our riders put in.
“We’re down, but we’re not out. We will regroup and back bounce for the return meeting against Redcar at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday.”
