BUMPER EVENING AT THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions are chasing all three points in a Cab Direct Championship clash against the Oxford Cheetahs at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow evening (Friday, June 20) in a meeting commencing at the slightly earlier than usual start-time of 7pm.

There are 30 heats on offer, since in the second half, the Steelers – the joint Scunthorpe and Sheffield side entered in the WSRA National League – take to the track against the Oxford Chargers.

Simon Lambert will make his usual switch from captaining the Scorpions in the first meeting to managing Steelers in the second meeting.

In the Cab Direct Championship fixture, there’s an aggregate bonus point up for grabs, since Cheetahs eked out a narrow 49-41 victory at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium on May 28.

In the NL encounter, Chargers are unbeaten and occupy second place in the table, while Steelers are third, so it also a highly attractive fixture. The inclusion of former Scunthorpe mascot Jack Franklin at No 8 for Steelers is another point of interest.

It’s the first action at the EWR in a fortnight, while the next home meeting is three weeks away, so supporters are urged to come along and enjoy a feast of speedway action.

During the interval between the two meetings, there will be a kids race on the speedway track.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “The Ellie Rose Travel Scunthorpe Scorpions had a really close fought meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway against the Oxford Cheetahs in the second leg of the MAXiCab Knockout Cup last month. We won by six points on the night.

“Cheetahs won the cup tie on aggregate quite comfortably in the end, which was a disappointment for us, but we only lost by eight at their place the following week in the Cab Direct Championship.

“So that was 48-42 to us here and 49-41 to them there – which indicates an exciting contest ahead in the battle for the aggregate bonus point! Eight points is not an impossibility for us to pull back by any means but we do need to come out of the traps from the word go and get ahead. I believe we are a lot better on our own track now compared to what we were earlier in the season.

“It should be another exciting meeting between the two teams and the weather forecast couldn’t be any better. I might even have to bring my shorts!

“It’s also a packed programme of racing as we have a double header with a National League match between the Steelers and the Chargers following on after the senior meeting. In between, we’ll do the kids race.

“It should be a top night of entertainment at the EWR, with 30 heats of action. We’ve kept prices competitive – it’s just £5 more than a standalone Scorpions’ fixture.
