BIG MATCH PREVIEW: Scunthorpe v Berwick

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to kick-start their Cab Direct Championship campaign when they host the Berwick Bandits at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow evening (Friday) at 7.30pm.
The same two clubs then clash for the return fixture at Berwick on Saturday evening, meaning a total of five league points are on offer over the weekend.
Scunthorpe have started their Cab Direct Championship league fixtures with defeats at Poole and Oxford, plus a home draw to Glasgow, where Scorpions lost the subsequent Super Heat. But a positive weekend would get their hopes of a top four spot and a place in the end-of-season play-offs back on track.
Scorpions are due to be at full strength for both meetings, while Berwick are currently without the injured Dayle Wood. Tom Spencer is the guest for Wood on Friday evening, and Freddy Hodder on Saturday.
New Green Sheet averages have been issued for June, but both Luke Harrison and skipper Simon Lambert remain at reserve for Scorpions. Local teenager Harrison scored 16+3 in the previous home meeting.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “There’s a long way to go this season, but we definitely need to be picking up some victories and building some momentum.
“We will take it one step at a time, starting with the home meeting with Berwick at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday.
“The first priority is to win the meeting, and then also build up an aggregate lead ready for the away meeting on Saturday, although it would be even better if we can do the double over Bandits this weekend.
“Berwick do have a decent line-up this season, led by two former Grand Prix riders in their ranks in Peter Kildemand and Craig Cook, plus former Scorpion Drew Kemp. It should be a very good meeting ahead at the EWR, full of breath-taking speedway.”
Weather permitting, Scorpions will be introducing an interval – taking place around Heat 10 or Heat 12. During the interval, there will be a kids race on the speedway track.
For those who cannot make it to the Eddie Wright Raceway, Scorpions are live streaming the meeting for just £12.99 at: https://tv.scunthorpe-speedway.com/
