Big Match Preview: Scunthorpe v Redcar
ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions are seeking to kick-start their season when they entertain the Redcar Bears in the BSN Series at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Good Friday (April 18), in an afternoon meeting commencing at 3pm.
There are 30 heats on offer, since in the second half, the Steelers – the joint Scunthorpe and Sheffield side entered in the WSRA National League – take to the track against the Middlesbrough Tigers, Redcar’s own junior side.
Simon Lambert will switch from captaining the Scorpions in the first meeting, to managing Steelers in the second meeting.
Scorpions started their season with a 35-55 defeat in a MAXiCab Knockout Cup meeting at Oxford last week, while Steve Worrall, Jake Allen and Lambert have previously ridden at the EWR this season, in the Championship League Riders’ Championship, where Worrall topped the qualifying scores and eventually finished third.
The clash against Redcar will be the first time that Scorpions will combine as a team at home this season, and is also their opening fixture in the BSN Series. Declan Kennedy will make his home debut at reserve, alongside brother Zaine Kennedy.
The BSN Series is divided into three regional groups, with both Redcar and Workington joining Scorpions in the Northern group. The group winner progresses to the semi-finals, with the best runner-up across the three groups also advancing.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It’s now all systems go for the season, as we welcome Redcar in the first match of our BSN Series qualifying group. It’s always a thrilling meeting between the two sides and I’m fully expecting that again.
“We managed to get all the way to the final of the BSN Series last year so that will again be the target.
“There’s also the rechristened Steelers taking on Redcar’s second team, the Middlesbrough Tigers, in the National League.
“It should be a very enjoyable afternoon, with 30 heats of action. We’ve kept prices competitive – it’s just £5 more than a standalone Scorpions’ fixture while we haven’t raised our admission prices this season – and I hope the fans turn up in force and get behind both Scunthorpe teams.”
