Terrific start to 2025 season – full fixtures
THE prestigious Championship League Riders’ Championship launches the 21st season of action at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday, April 6 (3pm start-time).
The competition dates back to 1968, when Middlesbrough’s Graham Plant won the British League Division Two Riders’ Championship at Hackney. The 2025 season will represent the first time that the competition has been held at Scunthorpe.
The meeting will involve all the top riders from the Cab Direct Championship, including all the No 1 riders across the nine teams.
The first team action at the Eddie Wright Raceway follows on Good Friday (April 18), when the Scunthorpe Scorpions entertain local rivals Redcar Bears in the BSN Series. The meeting will start at 3pm, and it is hoped it will be a double header also featuring the Scunthorpe Stags in a National League fixture.
Scunthorpe are in the northern group of the BSN Series, along with Redcar and Workington – the groups is unchanged from 2024. The group winner will progress automatically to the semi-finals, along with the runner-up, providing they have the best record across the three groups.
Elsewhere, Scunthorpe face Oxford in the quarter-finals of the MAXiCab Knockout Cup. The aggregate winners will progress to the semi-finals.
The first league meeting of the season at the EWR takes place on Friday, May 16, when the Glasgow Tigers are the visitors. The top four teams in the Cab Direct Championship progress to the play-offs, which are due to take place in September.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “This year is almost guaranteed to be a very exciting year of speedway at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
“We are highly honoured to be staging the Championship League Riders’ Championship at Scunthorpe on Sunday, April 6. It follows a day after the Championship Pairs at Workington, and hopefully travelling fans will make a weekend of it and attend both meetings.
“Beyond that, the Scorpions will host Redcar Bears on Good Friday, and that is always a good fixture, with a number of fans making the trip from Teesside to join our own faithful supporters on the terraces.
“We’ve qualified for the Cab Direct Championship play-offs for the last two years and that will again be a major aim, although this time we want to win them, while we’d also love to win back the MAXiCab Knockout Cup that we won in such memorable style at Poole in 2023.
“I seem to say this every year, but the Cab Direct Championship is a very competitive league and every meeting has the potential to be a thriller. The season is now counting down, and fans can start to prepare now they can put our dates in their diaries!”
