POOLE PIRATES 57 SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 33 (BSN Series Final, second leg)

Poole win 110-70 on aggregate

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions concluded their season with a 33-57 defeat in the second leg of the BSN Series Final at Poole last night (Wednesday), as the Poole Pirates won by 110-70 on aggregate.

Scunthorpe only tracked four of their regular line-up. Already without injured No 1 Michael Palm Toft and with teenage reserve sensation Luke Harrison en route to the European Under-19 Final in Germany, Scorpions also went into battle at Wimborne Road without Kyle Howarth, following the birth of his child during the day.

Scorpions had already lost the first leg at home at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday by 16 points. But they kept things tight in the first eight races at Poole, and closed to within four points on the night after skipper Simon Lambert came through to join guest Jake Mulford for a 5-1 in Heat 8.

But Pirates then simply powered away in the closing stages, scoring six heat advantages in the closing seven races. Scorpions were not helped by mechanical gremlins for Jake Allen, who lost two chains during the evening and was also excluded twice for exceeding the two-minute time allowance.

Scunthorpe promoter and stand-in team manager Rob Godfrey said: “We tried to bring back a bit of respectability back into the scoreline tonight, and we did the best we could with the tools we had.

“Guests are very hard to find at this stage of the season, and our thanks to Jake (Mulford) and Leon (Flint) for coming in and trying their hardest, which they did, as did all the boys.

“When we reflect on this season, we will realise that we’ve had a pretty good season, reaching the semi-finals of all three main competitions, and got as far as the final in the case of the BSN Series. We’ve been the third best team in the Cab Direct Championship and there’s another six teams who would swap our season for theirs. Congratulations to Poole on winning the BSN Series and congratulations too to Kyle Howarth on the birth of his son.”

POOLE 57: Richard Lawson 14+1, Ben Cook 12, Zach Cook 11+2, Tom Brennan 10+1, Tobias Thomsen 6+1, Sam Hagon 2+1, Vinnie Foord 2.

SCUNTHORPE 33: Simon Lambert 8+1, Conor Mountain 7+2, Jake Mulford 7+1, Nathan Ablitt 6, Leon Flint 3+1, Jake Allen 2, Kyle Howarth r/r.
