SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 54 WORKINGTON COMETS 36 (Cab Direct Championship)
ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions moved up to second place in the Cab Direct Championship with a 54-36 victory over the Workington Comets at the Eddie Wright Raceway last night (Friday).
Not only did Scorpions win on the night, but they also won the aggregate bonus point by 93-87, after they overcame a 12-point deficit at Northside last month.
For Scorpions, it was a perfect response after a controversial defeat at Glasgow last week and a drubbing in the Cab Direct Knockout Cup at Poole on Wednesday.
Scorpions flew into an 18-6 lead with four successive heat advantages and moved ahead on aggregate with a 5-1 from Michael Palm Toft and Simon Lambert in Heat 6.
Comets placed Craig Cook into Heat 9 as a tactical substitute and hit back with a 5-1. But Palm Toft and Lambert came through in brilliant fashion in Heat 10 for a 5-1.
After an exciting 5-1 for Palm Toft and Kyle Howarth in Heat 13, Connor Mountain and Nathan Ablitt secured the bonus point with a 4-2 in Heat 14.
Palm Toft scored a 12-point full maximum, while every Scorpions picked up a win or paid win.
Scunthrope team manager David Howe said: “It was a great team performance for us and job done.
“The bonus was also picking up the aggregate point. With a 12-point deficit, we knew we could pick it up, but it’s not a given. You can’t afford any slip-ups.
“Those extra points always help – it just makes our job of reaching the play-offs that little bit easier. Tonight not only did we win a bonus point, but Workington missed out on one, and they are one of the teams we are battling against in the top half of the table.
“Tofty (Michael Palm Toft) was excellent, Simon (Lambert) also had a good one, but the whole team performed well from one-to-seven.
“After the result at Poole on Wednesday, it was important we bounced straight back and restored our team morale and we’ve done that.”
SCUNTHORPE 54: Michael Palm Toft 12 (full maximum), Kyle Howarth 11+1, Jake Allen 9, Simon Lambert 8+2, Connor Mountain 5+1, Luke Harrison 5+1, Nathan Ablitt 4.
WORKINGTON 36: Craig Cook 13. Troy Batchelor 6+1, Jason Edwards 6, Antti Vuoloas 5, Claus Vissing 5, Sam McGurk 1, Celina Liebmann 0.
