SCORPIONS OUT TO BOOK SEMI-FINAL PLACE

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions return to action at the Eddie Wright Raceway in Normanby Road for the first time in four weeks, when they host Workington Comets in the concluding match of the Northern Group of the BSN Series tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm.

Following results in the other two groups, Scorpions know that a victory against Comets would secure a place in the semi-finals. At the moment, Workington top the group on seven points, after three victories, while Scunthorpe have five points, after double victory over Redcar but having suffered a 34-56 defeat at Workington.

Scorpions would top the group if they are able to secure the aggregate bonus point against Comets, but would still progress as best runners-up if they win but fail to gain the bonus.

Scunthorpe should be at full strength, since Nathan Ablitt is set to return for Scorpions, after a month on the sidelines with an ankle, after he was involved in an accident with Plymouth’s Joe Thompson at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “The main thing against Workington in terms of the BSN Series is that as long as we don’t lose to them, we will move through to the semi-finals as the best runner-up.

“But I don’t see any harm in aiming high and trying to pull back from the deficit from our defeat at Workington and aiming for the aggregate point as well. The weather is due to be good, so the track will be how we want it.

“We’ve already had a couple of home meetings in which we’ve been firing extremely well and we are expecting Nathan Ablitt back after injury. He is planning to have a practice spin around the Eddie Wright Raceway but he expects to be all right he and should be back.

“With four weeks since the last home meeting, our fans will be suffering withdrawal symptoms, and I’m sure an entertaining night’s action is ahead.”
