SCORPIONS SEEKING STRONG START

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions face local rivals Redcar Bears in the northern group of the BSN Series tomorrow evening (Friday) at 7.30pm, in what is now the season-opener at the Eddie Wright Raceway following the postponement of Scunthorpe vs Workington clash on Good Friday.

Stamped re-admission tickets from last week will be valid at any one meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway this season.

Both Scunthorpe and Redcar have put together highly competitive sides in 2024 and Friday’s clash is highly-anticipated.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Firstly, I’d like to apologise to everyone for the events of Good Friday, when our home meeting against Workington was postponed by the referee an hour after the scheduled start-time. A lot of us saw things very differently to how the referee saw it. In a nutshell, we had a heavy shower, we dealt with it and the meeting could and should have gone ahead in my opinion. Simon Lambert and David Howe went on a track walk with the referee, while Simon offered to go out and do some laps to test it, but that wasn’t taken up.

“I’ve actually got a broken rib at the moment, but we cracked on knowing the track would be all right once we’d finished working on it. The track was rock hard underneath and once we’d got the first couple of races out of the way, we would probably have had dust by the end of the night. We have the tools here to do the job, we did the job, and then we end up with everyone standing around waiting for an hour just for the referee to call it off. It was all so frustrating and disappointing, but there’s nothing else we can than apologise – and also apologise for the problems with the PA system – and move on.

“Any meeting between Scunthorpe and Redcar is always a cracker. Both clubs have a good racetrack and enjoy visiting each other. We’ve seen some classic meetings between the two clubs and looking at the sides assembled for 2024, that has every chance of being the case again.

“There’s only four qualifying meetings in the BSN Series and it’s essential to get off to a good start. The very minimum we need is a home win, while any advantage we can build up to help land the aggregate point is a huge bonus. Of course, Redcar will be keen to get off to a good start as well, so it has all the ingredients of a great meeting.”
