ELEVATED WORKINGTON PROVIDE OPENING TEST FOR SCORPIONS

CHAMPIONSHIP newcomers Workington Comets will provide the opening challenge of the 2024 season for the Scunthorpe Scorpions at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Good Friday (March 29th).

Comets competed in the National League in 2023 but have moved up to the Cab Direct Championship in 2024. The start-time of the BSN Series clash has yet to be confirmed, although it is most likely to be either 4pm or 5pm.

Scunthorpe are in the northern group of the BSN Series, along with Redcar and Workington. The group winner will progress automatically to the semi-finals, along with the runner-up, providing they have the best record across the three groups.

Elsewhere, cup holders Scunthorpe face Plymouth in the first round of the Knockout Cup. The aggregate winners will progress to the quarter finals, where they will face Berwick.

The first league meeting of the season at the EWR takes place on Friday, May 10, when the Oxford Cheetahs are the visitors. The top four teams in the Cab Direct Championship progress to the play-offs, which are due to take place in September.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Next year promises to be another exciting year of racing at the Eddie Wright Raceway. This is the earliest that the fixtures have ever been out, so it gives supporters plenty of time to get the dates in their diaries.

“The visit of Workington on Good Friday will be the first time they’ve been at the EWR since 2018, when they were here in the first leg of the Cup Final. Shortly after that, Derwent Park sadly closed, but it was great to see them back in speedway at their new track at Northside and we welcome them to the Cab Direct Championship in 2024.

“A major aim will be to again qualify for the play-offs, and win our first league title since we beat Somerset in a thrilling final in 2012.

“We’re also after a successful defence of the Knockout Cup that we so memorably won at Poole in October. We are unfortunate to be one of the two teams to be drawn in the first round of the cup, since they are nine teams in the league, and that needs reducing to eight before the quarter finals. But we determined to get past our old friends from Plymouth and providing we do, then it’s Berwick in the quarters.”

“I seem to say this every year, but the Championship is a very competitive league and every meeting has the potential to be a fantastic meeting. I can’t wait for the 2024 season to start.”
