ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions are targeting victory at the Championship Pairs at Oxford tonight (Friday, 7.30pm).

Scunthorpe are represented by Ryan Douglas and Simon Lambert in the prestigious event. Scorpions have never won the Championship Pairs but were beaten finalists in successive seasons in 2012 and 2013 at a time the meeting was held at Somerset.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We’re not going to Oxford to make up the numbers – we want to win it.

“Ryan was a bit unlucky not to reach the semi-finals of the Riders’ Championship at Redcar on Sunday. An exclusion in one race cost him, and as Charles Wright demonstrated, once you reached the semi-finals, it didn’t matter if you had topped the qualifying scores or not. Ryan is one of the very best riders in this league and he’s got another crack at some silverware at Oxford.

“Simon doesn’t mind the big occasion and he did very well in the British Final recently. He won two races in that and certainly put some of the more fancied contenders in the shade. Simon is always looking what the team needs to do to win, and that will be no different in a pairs competition.

“I believe we have the right two men for the job in Ryan and Simon. It’s a top line-up consisting of the best riders in the Cab Direct Championship, but we’ve come close in this competition before and we’d love to go all the way to the final and then bring back the silverware.”

The event at Oxford kick-starts the biggest weekend in British Speedway, with the British Grand Prix at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium following on Saturday. Tickets for the Championship Pairs must be purchased in advance from Oxford Speedway via their website: https://oxfordspeedway.club/tickets/

For those who cannot make it to Oxford, the British Speedway Network (BSN) are live streaming the meeting for £11.99 at: https://watch.britishspeedway.co.uk/
