MUST-WIN MEETING FOR SCORPIONS

ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions face a vital clash in their quest for a play-off spot against the Berwick Bandits at the Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm.

It is the first meeting for Scorpions at the EWR for three weeks and is one of three remaining league matches in the Championship left for Scorpions – the others are away meetings at Redcar and Berwick next weekend.

While fifth-placed Plymouth are not entirely clear, it’s most likely Redcar (currently sixth) and Scunthorpe (currently seventh) are battling over the sixth and final play-off position, while Berwick also have a small mathematical chance. Scorpions should have a better idea of what they require from their two away meetings by next weekend, but in the meantime, it’s imperative to take all three points against Bandits.

There’s a double boost for Scorpions, as they will track seven of their own riders for the first time since June.

No 1 Ryan Douglas is fit again, after missing the Championship Pairs at Oxford last Friday after requiring a week off with his troublesome reoccurring shoulder injury. Not only that, but fellow Australian Jake Allen is all ready to resume, having missed the last couple of months through a wrist injury.

Scunthorpe also hand a home debut to recent signing Anders Rowe, who has been brought in for the injured Zaine Kennedy. Rowe has already impressed with 10 points at Redcar and 5 points at Leicester in two away appearances for Scorpions.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “Our season now boils down to just a few meetings. If we don’t get the results we want, then it will be season over and we’ll be done for the year by the first week in September.

“It goes without saying the meeting against Berwick at the Eddie Wright Raceway is a ‘must win’. Our latest signing Anders Rowe will be making his home debut for us and he’s already shown he will be a big asset to the team with his two away performances in the Jubilee League matches at Redcar and Leicester.

“We need the three points against Bandits. We could then do with other results going in our favour, which would tee us up nicely for our big fixtures at Redcar and Berwick next week. But we will concentrate on getting the results we need one meeting at a time, because it’s still all in our hands.

“Berwick were involved in a very good meeting at the EWR last season, when they pushed us all the way, and I’m sure another great night of speedway lies ahead.”
