ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions’ promoter Rob Godfrey has paid tribute to former Scunthorpe rider Kevin Armitage, who died recently at the age of 55.

Born in 1966, Armitage was a hometown rider who rode for Scunthorpe Stags at Ashby Ville in 1983 and 1984. He made 16 official appearances in ‘83, obtaining a CMA of 5.29. The following season, he scored a total of 162 points from 31 official appearances and upped his CMA to 5.54.

He subsequently rode for both Barrow and Glasgow in brief spells in 1985, but then retired.

Godfrey said: “When we brought speedway back to Scunthorpe in 2005, Kev helped us out a hell of a lot at the track in those early days. He was instrumental in so many projects getting finished and we had a lot of fun together. I remember us riding speedway bikes around the track in the snow for starters!

“We were really upset to hear that he had passed away and I would like to pass on the condolences of everyone to his wife Sue and all of his family.

“It would be nice if we could get a win over Glasgow in memory of Kev, but we are under no illusions that it will be easy against a strong Tigers side.”
