Connor Coles in for Scorpions
ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions have signed Connor Coles as a replacement for the injured Ryan Kinsley. Coles will make his debut in Scorpions’ 1-to-7 in the crunch home meeting against high-flying Glasgow Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday (7.30pm).
Kinsley had an operation on his collarbone at the start of the week, which he damaged in a crash at Mildenhall, but sadly faces around 12 weeks on the sidelines.
27-year-old Coles is no stranger to the SGB Championship and had a 17-match spell with Edinburgh in 2019.
He has started this season strongly with Leicester in the National League and impressed with 4+2 in a guest appearance in Scorpions’ 47-43 victory over Redcar at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Bank Holiday Friday. He took a 5-1 with Jordan Palin in Heat 2, led Charles Wright for much of Heat 11, and took a crucial 4-2 with fellow guest Justin Sedgmen in Heat 14.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “I’m delighted to sign Connor Coles as a fully-fledged Scorpion.
“He has earned his place, after his guest performance for us last week against Redcar – if he does that well around the Eddie Wright Raceway every week, I’ll be well chuffed. He’s got a bit of experience at Championship level and he’s a rider on form, so it made total sense to sign him.
“As for Ryan Kinsley, the lad’s been unlucky. Collarbone injuries are quite common in speedway, and most riders are fortunate enough to be fit to resume within a month. But Ryan has faced complications. From my understanding, his collarbone had popped out of joint, and to put it back in place, they had to re-break it, re-position it and then plate it.
“What that means is that Ryan will face another 12 weeks on the sidelines and that pretty much rules him out for the season. It’s a real shame, because he was starting to show signs of form, just before his injury. We wish Ryan a speedy recovery.”
In further team news, Tero Aarnio’s 14-day-ban expires on Friday, but he will miss both this weekend’s clashes against Glasgow Tigers due to World Championship duty.
Godfrey explained: “Having received his ban for failing to get back from a longtrack commitment in time, something we weren’t very happy about, Tero was keen to get back riding for us. But the Finnish federation has insisted that he rides in his Speedway Grand Prix qualifying round this weekend.
“It’s in Slovakia on Saturday, so this time it is impossible for Tero to ride in that, and either ride for us on either Friday at the EWR or on Sunday at Glasgow. We will use rider replacement in the home meeting, while Justin Sedgmen will be our guest rider up at Glasgow on Sunday.”
