Big Match preview: Scunthorpe v Oxford
SCORPIONS AIM TO RETURN TO WINNING WAYS
ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions plan to return to winning ways when they host the Oxford Cheetahs in a league clash at the Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm.
In their last three Championship outings, Scorpions suffered double 42-48 defeats to Plymouth, and then returned home from Birmingham without any points last Wednesday, after a 41-49 loss.
Oxford Cheetahs closed following the 2007 season, but they have returned this season. In Oxford’s last visit to the EWR on October 21, 2007, Scorpions won 61-31 to clinch a 108-73 aggregate victory in the Conference League play-off final.
Scorpions’ No 1 Ryan Douglas is due to return from an injury he sustained in Poland at the weekend. Oxford are missing two riders through injury, Troy Batchelor and ex-Scorpion Josh Macdonald, and bring in 2007 British Grand Prix winner Chris Harris and Nathan Stoneman as replacements.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It’s an important match against Oxford, because we certainly can’t afford another home defeat, so we need to be on it.
“Ryan (Douglas) had an accident in Poland last weekend and had to miss his Premiership fixture for Wolverhampton on Monday, but he has told me he will be back for us tomorrow.
“It’s brilliant that Oxford Cheetahs are back after 15 years away. Oxford are such a big name in British Speedway. We were privileged to be the visitors on their re-opening night on April 13 – it was fantastic to see such a fabulous stadium staging speedway again in front of such a large crowd. Cheetahs won on that occasion, but we aim to return the compliment tomorrow and beat them.
“With Scott Nicholls and Chris Harris leading the charge for Oxford, two riders who have won ten British Championships between them, it’s going to be another night of some cracking speedway and the Eddie Wright Raceway will be the only place to be!”
