ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions’ No 1 Adam Ellis has become the first-ever Scorpion to win the British Final, after triumphing at Belle Vue’s National Speedway Stadium last night (Monday).

It is biggest individual success recorded by a current Scunthorpe rider in over 50 years of history of the North Lincolnshire club.

25-year-old Ellis started his night with a third place in Heat 3, but then strung together a series of victories and topped the qualifying races on 13 points, keeping his cool despite rain showers during proceedings.

In the final, he made a fast start and then fended off the attentions of both Dan Bewley and Chares Wright.

Ellis said in the wake of his victory: “I’ve been thinking of this meeting for the last couple of weeks, so it was so good to come here and pull it off. It was the longest four laps of my life in the final.

“I was happy with the bike set-up and then the rain came, and we didn’t know whether to change anything or not. I’m so glad that we didn’t. I’m just so happy!”

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “I’m chuffed to bits for Adam, who really deserved to be British Champion – he was the best rider out there during the meeting.

“This is also a huge success for the town of Scunthorpe – to have the British Champion riding for us. It’s such a prestigious title.”

Scorpions’ skipper Simon Lambert, a late replacement for Edward Kennett, put in a battling display and scored six points.
