SECOND-PLACED Attis Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions make the long journey to the south coast to face Eastbourne Eagles at the Arlington Stadium this evening (Saturday, 6.30pm).

Scunthorpe climbed to the top of the table with a superb 51-39 away victory at Birmingham in their last meeting 10 days ago, although Glasgow has since reclaimed that position with victories at Plymouth and Edinburgh.

Scorpions are two men down tonight. No 1 Adam Ellis is riding for Great Britain in the final of the European Pairs Championship in Macon, France, while Theo Pijper is on the sidelines, after a recent crash in the World Longtrack Championship.

Scorpions will operate rider replacement for Ellis, while James Shanes will come in as a guest for Pijper.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey explains: “Theo took a knock during the World Longtrack round in France. He then rode for us at Birmingham, but he wasn’t right. He’s now been signed off from riding seven days and that started on Tuesday.

“Eastbourne are also missing two riders. Both teams have been chasing guests who simply aren’t there, which is why both clubs will use rider replacement. Our thanks to go to James Shanes for stepping in as a guest for us.

“It is what it is. We’re missing riders and they’re missing riders. As a result, it’s very hard to predict the result, so we’ll go into the meeting with the mindset that anything is possible.”

Expected teams for tonight:

Eastbourne Eagles: 1. Richard Lawson, 2. Zane Keleher (guest), 3. Edward Kennett, 4. Rider replacement for Tom Brennan, 5. Lewis Kerr, 6. Jason Edwards, 7. Drew Kemp.

Attis Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. Rider replacement for Adam Ellis, 2. Simon Lambert (captain), 3. James Shanes (guest), 4. Tero Aarnio, 5. Thomas Jorgensen, 6. Jordan Palin, 7. Josh MacDonald.

* ATTIS INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions are back at home next Friday (July 30th, 7.30pm) after a three-week break in fixtures at the Eddie Wright Raceway for a highly anticipated clash with the mighty Poole Pirates. It is the first time that Poole, who have won the top-flight championship on no fewer than ten occasions, have ever visited Scunthorpe.
