NICHOLLS STAR ATTRACTION AS KENT MAKE SENIOR DEBUT AT EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY

SECOND-PLACED Attis Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions will be seeking to maintain their unblemished 100% home league record when Kent Kings make their first-ever visit at Championship level at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Friday, July 9th) at 7.30pm.

Kent moved up to the Championship this season. They previously visited the EWR at National League level in 2014 to face the Scunthorpe Stags, but this is the first time they have faced the Scorpions. Kings are led by record-breaking seven-time British Champion Scott Nicholls, who has been on impressive form this season.

Scunthorpe have won six out of six league meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway, although they were made to work hard before taking a 47-43 victory over a spirited Berwick Bandits side last Friday.

Scunthorpe No 1 Adam Ellis is missing, since he is on Great Britain duty in Hungary on Saturday evening, representing GB in the European Pairs Championship, alongside Chris Harris and Tom Brennan. Former Scorpion Steve Worrall will guest for Ellis in the No 1 berth.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “I hope the meeting is every bit as exciting as last Friday’s win over Berwick, which may not quite have hit the same heights in terms of quality of racing that we’ve become accustomed to recently, but more than made up for it in the scoreline.

“We were certainly sweating a bit as the match swung one way, then the other, but thanks to a strong finish, we just got the better of Bandits.

“While we fully realise we do need to get some away points, first and foremost it’s about your home form, it’s about keeping a clean sheet at home and so far we have managed that while some other teams haven’t.

“I think it’ll be another top night of speedway. Kings are led by a class rider in Scott Nicholls, who has been in excellent form so far this season, and they contain some riders who can be a real handful around the Eddie Wright Raceway. We need to be on our guard and ensure we bring home the three league points.

“Hopefully, we can have a great track again and some more superb racing, and then we have a couple of Fridays off because we don’t have another meeting here until Poole come on July 30th.”

Tickets for the meeting are on sale on the club website.
