Scunthorpe v Edinburgh – big match preview
SCORPIONS IN ANOTHER TOUGH TEST AT EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY
SECOND-PLACED Attis Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions face a stern challenge from a Scottish side for a second successive week and will be aiming to inflict the first defeat of the season on unbeaten Edinburgh Monarchs at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow (Sunday, June 27) at 3pm.
A packed afternoon will consist of 30 races in total and will also feature action from the 500cc and 250cc classes of the British Youth Championship, which will follow the Scunthorpe vs Edinburgh clash.
A week ago, Scorpions scored a magnificent 51-39 victory over league leaders Glasgow, on an afternoon that included some brilliant racing.
Third-placed Monarchs have won three of their opening five fixtures in the Championship, along with two draws against Redcar. Scunthorpe boast a 100% home record from the four league matches at the EWR, so something must give in the clash between the two sides.
It’s the second clash in three days between the two clubs. Scunthorpe are seeking to make amends after a 38-52 defeat at a wet Armadale Stadium up in Scotland on Friday, where fortune completely deserted the visiting side. Scorpions are waiting to see if Thomas Jorgensen will be fit, after he suffered muscle damage in his shoulder in a crash at Armadale.
New No 1 Adam Ellis will make his home debut for Scorpions against Monarchs.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “Our team spirit is second to none right now, we’ve got everyone believing and working together, and that gives you those extra points and that extra motivation. It is the team spirit that has effectively got us through so far.
“Simon Lambert is leading by example from the front as captain, I think people may have written him off at the beginning of the year but he’s doing a fantastic job leading the team and motivating them…not that they really need motivating at the moment because they want it as much as Simon, they want the extra meetings that the play-offs will bring and they are putting the extra shift in.
“For the second week running we have Scottish opposition with our old friends from Edinburgh paying their annual visit. Just like last week, it’s two teams at the business end of the Championship in direct opposition.
“It was an amazing meeting all-round against Glasgow last Sunday and a credit to the riders of both teams because they gave us a top-class fixture. I’m hoping for a meeting as entertaining this week… and hopefully we’ll see another Scunthorpe victory and the Scorpions collecting another three valuable league points.”
Tickets for the meeting are on sale on the club website.
