SCUNTHORPE’s former captain and club legend Wayne Carter will ride for the HEB Scunthorpe Stags in their National League challenge against Leicester at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st (3pm). He will be joined by youngster Jamie Halder.

The grassroots event is the first team speedway meeting in the UK in 2020. A limited number of tickets have gone on sale on the club website and are already selling very well.

Carter, now 49, was a leading light for Scorpions in their very first season at the Eddie Wright Raceway in 2005, before injury forced his retirement during 2006. But he has remained an integral part of the club as its training officer.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Wayne is really up for this meeting – he wanted to do it. He still sometimes enters our Amateur Meetings at the Eddie Wright Raceway and he can more than hold his own against the younger riders.

“Wayne is, quite rightfully, considered a club legend. He was the first-ever captain of the Scunthorpe Scorpions at this particular track, and he was a near ten-point man for us in 2005.

“If anything, his contribution behind the scenes has been even greater.

“When we line up on Bank Holiday Monday, many of the riders in our line-up will have started off riding on our mini-track with Wayne, and therefore it only seems appropriate that Wayne will be our skipper.

“We get so much positive feedback about the help he has given riders, be it ones who are just coming for a one-off session or those who want to progress in the sport.”

Halder is 20 years old and from Yorkshire and made his National League debut for Coventry Storm in 2015.

Godfrey added: “Jamie is a local lad and has always wanted to ride for us. It’s nearly happened a couple of times and we’re delighted to give him that opportunity.”

Carter and Halder join Ryan Kinsley, Archie Freeman and Harry McGurk, plus 250cc riders Luke Harrison and William Hocaniuk, as confirmed starters for Stags. The final two names will be released on Monday morning.

The innovative 19-heat heat format for the meeting also includes four 250cc races, with at least nine riders on each side.

There are a limited number of tickets on sale, which will be sold on a first-come first-served basis, so supporters are encouraged to buy sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are only available online via this club website – entry is by pre-purchased ticket only.

The price for all adults aged 16 and above is £15.50 (£15 plus a 50p handling fee – the handling fee goes to PayPal, not the club). This all-inclusive price includes the programme and parking. Under 16s admitted free with a contact tracing responsible adult.

Members of the public are expected to respect the safe distancing advice given. If they do not, or show signs of Covid-19, they may be asked to leave. Any individual already showing signs of Covid-19 must not visit the venue.
