SCUNTHORPE are set to stage the first UK team racing of the year on Bank Holiday Monday (August 31, 3pm).

A National League standard challenge match between Scunthorpe and Leicester will go ahead following the massive success of the British Youth Championship at the Eddie Wright Raceway last weekend.

Once again limited crowd numbers will be allowed into the venue with the club stressing the importance of social distancing when watching around the circuit. All spectators must book in advance via Scunthorpe’s website and tickets will be available next week.

Club co-promoter Rob Godfrey said: “The club’s email inbox was full on Monday and Tuesday with people congratulating us on the success of Sunday. Everyone enjoyed themselves in the appropriate manner, I’ve always said speedway fans are sensible folk and we thank them all for playing their part. We haven’t had one complaint from anyone in the stadium, it’s been totally positive and congratulatory.

“I’m delighted to be working with our friends at Leicester and we will be announcing riders throughout the coming weeks, but the way Leicester are talking they are going to be tracking a powerhouse top five.

“And it’s not just about the conventional 15 heats. We will also be staging four 250cc races with the youngsters representing the teams and those results will count to the progressive total of the meeting – so it will effectively be over 19 heats.

“These will be after heats 3, 6, 9 and 12 and this adds entertainment value for the fans as well as giving the kids a chance to race in a team event. It should be a terrific Bank Holiday event for everyone to enjoy.”
