We thank the Speedway Star for alerting us to a letter that was sent to them after Friday evening’s meeting against Somerset, and also to the writer of the letter, Roddy McDougall, for his permission to reproduce the letter on our website. We do our very best to put on a show for supporters at Scunthorpe and always appreciate positive feedback.

Dear Speedway Star,

I’m just back from my first visit to Scunthorpe (against Somerset) and wanted to say how impressed I was with the standard of racing.

As I’m based in London, I’m having to travel further afield this year and the two previous Championship meetings I’ve attended have been, frankly, a bit ho-hum. At Scunthorpe, virtually every race featured some kind of passing with almost half having close, on the line finishes. And while the home fans may well have questioned at least a couple of decisions, the racing on show provided excellent entertainment for a neutral like me.

The meeting began at half past seven and was over by a quarter to nine: a brisk riders’ parade, no interval and, most noticeably, no tractor sent out for re-grading at any point. And yet the track produced top class racing from start to finish. Lessons for others?

Best wishes,
Roddy McDougall, London
