Super Sunday at the Eddie Wright Raceway!
HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions stage a bumper 33-heat feast of speedway action at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday (5pm), headlined by an intriguing league clash between Scorpions and Glasgow Tigers.
To complete an exciting day of action, sixteen of the best youngsters in the country will contest the 500cc and 250cc classes of Round 4 of the British Youth Championship.
No 1 and skipper Steve Worrall is set to ride in his first home meeting since returning to action for Scorpions following his broken leg, while Jason Garrity will return to action after a couple of weeks out with a thumb injury.
Scorpions are nearly up to full strength, but not quite. Stefan Nielsen only had the pot off his leg on Wednesday, and is unlikely to be ready for an immediate return. Edinburgh’s Josh Pickering, a recent impressive visitor to the EWR, has been booked as a guest.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It’s going be a bumper weekend of speedway action all-around.
“Josh Auty and Jake Allen are flying the flag for Scorpions in the pairs on Friday evening, and then Jason Garrity is one of the reserves at Cardiff on Saturday.
“We’re the only club in the entire country staging a meeting on Sunday, and it is the perfect way for people to finish their weekend, with a total of 33 races for just £17.
“The start-time of 5pm is designed to fit in with fans from both Scunthorpe and Glasgow travelling back from Cardiff, while we are also in easy travelling distance for many supporters in the midlands and the north.”
Godfrey is expecting that the clash between the Scorpions and the Tigers – a must-win fixture for the home side – will be a cracker.
He enthuses: “The meeting’s got everything, hasn’t it? It’s Steve Worrall’s first home meeting back, plus Jason Garrity is also returning from injury, and then from the Glasgow perspective, there’s the debut for Tigers for Grand Prix rider Craig Cook.
“Glasgow are a very strong side, especially at their top end. Throw in the likes of three-time British Champion Chris Harris, Claus Vissing and Paul Starke, and it’s obvious they are now strong contenders in the league.
“For our part, we really need to take all three points to keep our play-off hopes alive.
“It’s a huge positive that we now have our No. 1 back, with Steve Worrall returning to the ranks. That’s a massive relief and hopefully Steve will be back to his high-scoring best for the rest of the season.
“It’s great to also have Jason Garrity back, and Stefan Nielsen isn’t too far away from returning.
“If all goes to plan, we can finally dispense with the burden of the rider replacement facility on Sunday. We’ve booked Josh Pickering as a guest and that will allow us to track a seven-man team.
“It’s a very interesting clash for so many reasons, and then as a huge bonus, we also have the best youngsters in the country doing battle in the British Youth Championship.
“It really is a Super Sunday of speedway action”, concluded Godfrey.
