A DEPLETED Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions saw their five-match winning run come to a halt, with a 36-54 defeat to Glasgow Tigers at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium last night (Friday).

Already without the injured pair of Steve Worrall and Stefan Nielsen, Scorpions were further hampered when Jason Garrity (pictured) pulled out of the meeting after a Heat 4 fall, which aggravated the injuries he had picked up at Belle Vue 11 days previously.

Scorpions took an early 7-5 lead, but without Garrity, resources were stretched to the limit, with the side using both rider replacement and injury rider replacement.

Aaron Summers proved a wise choice of guest for Scorpions, and top-scored with 12+2 from seven riders, while both Josh Auty and Jake Allen were also paid for double figures.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It was a challenging night, not only for the boys, but also for team manager Dave Peet, who had a task on his hands once we were using both rider replacement and injury rider replacement.

“Jason Garrity was struggling a bit for strength, and when he crashed, he reopened the wound in his arm, that he had picked up at Belle Vue. He is going to go to have it stitched up. He’s now got another week for it to heal, by which time it should be stronger.

“I can’t complain with the way any of the boys rode, while Aaron Summers came in and did a good job as a guest. But there was simply too much against us.

“With a full seven-man squad, it may well have been a different story, while the weather helped create a challenging track, and we suffered a succession of falls early on.

“I’d like to wish Gino Manzares the best of luck in the Speedway Of Nations with the United States. He could have easily pulled out of the meeting at Glasgow, just one day before his first meeting in a World Championship meeting, but he fulfilled his commitment.

“His points don’t reflect he was giving 100% for us at Glasgow. There was no holding back from him. He’s a good lad, and deserves a good tournament with the USA.”
