HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions head into the SGB Championship Fours at Peterborough this afternoon (Sunday, 2pm), with team manager Dave Peet stating: “We’re not there to just make up the numbers.”

Scunthorpe have endured a difficult 2017 season at times, and currently sit in ninth place in the ten-strong SGB Championship league table.

But buoyed by a superb 50-43 victory at Workington last night – Scunthorpe’s first victory at Derwent Park since 1980 – Scorpions head into the showpiece event at the East Of England Showground with renewed belief.

Peet says: “We’ve got five riders who can all score points around Peterborough.

“Our tails are up after the superb win at Workington. Michael (Palm Toft) and Lewis (Kerr) scored a last-heat 5-1 over British Champion Craig Cook, so they enter the meeting on a high.

“Josh Auty and Jake Allen are also no slouches around Peterborough – they both enjoy riding a fast track.

“And we have the bonus of having Ryan Douglas at reserve. Ryan won the individual event last year when the fours was held across a complete weekend at Peterborough, so he could be a real trump card for us.

“The key in the fours is to continue to score solidly throughout the meeting, and that’s something we can do. I firmly believe we can fight our way out of our group, and then make our presence felt in the final.”

Group A: Peterborough, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Workington, Scunthorpe.
Group B: Glasgow, Newcastle, Ipswich, Redcar, Berwick.
Final: Top two from each group.
