Scunthorpe training track is ten years old!
THE training track at the Eddie Wright Raceway celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, which means for ten years, it has been training speedway riders for the future – with a great deal of success!
The 92-metre circuit was constructed in 2007, and is open to any prospective riders of ANY age, who would like to have a first go at riding a speedway bike.
Former Scorpions’ skipper Wayne Carter hosts regular sessions at weekends, usually fortnightly on Sundays.
Scunthorpe Speedway owner Rob Godfrey says: “Wayne Carter has done a brilliant job with the training track – he came in when it was just a few months old and has done it ever since. I think he wanted to give something back to speedway – and he’s certainly done that in abundance.
“There’s a whole list of riders who started out on our mini-track. Ashley Birks, Josh Bates, the Worrall twins, Max Clegg, Danny Phillips, current Scorpions’ No 7 Josh Bailey – the list just goes on and on.
“There’s also a whole group of riders who are now showing their paces in the British Youth Championship – Jordan Palin; the McGurk family; again I could just continue to name riders.
“I can’t recommend it highly enough to any prospective riders. Wayne has been there and done it, and is the ideal man to guide you into riding and sliding a speedway bike.”
Godfrey also points out that you don’t necessarily need to be plotting a career ahead in speedway; the mini-track is also available for corporate hire (up to 12 riders), and for any fans who simply want to experience what it’s like to ride the bike.
“It is a great experience and a great introduction to speedway”, he adds.
“Primarily Wayne Carter does experience days, when you come and rent the bikes. He organises all your gear and equipment, gives you tuition and basically gets you sliding.
“You get the experience of riding a bike on a smaller track and it’s been hugely successful.
“It’s usually on Sundays for rookie riders who fancy hiring out a bike to try speedway out. In the main, the mini-track doesn’t run without Wayne, but if you’re experienced and want to rent it out or a few hours, that’s an option too.
“We also have gift vouchers to buy someone the experience as a birthday or Christmas present”, Godfrey added.
The details:
Scunthorpe Speedway’s 92-metre mini-track was built inside the stadium grounds in the summer of 2007 and has proven to be an extremely popular addition.
Its size makes it ideal for the smaller-engined bikes (e.g. 125-150cc) and is an excellent introduction to art of sliding. Already riders have progressed to the British Under-15 championships and the club’s amateur meetings, and indeed onto the SGB Premiership and SGB Championship, whilst many other users are fans of all ages and abilities, and from all over the country, who want to experience the sport in relative safety.
There are a variety of ways to ride the mini-track suitable for all ages and abilities.
