Sunday’s double-header: preview
KERR-MINATOR MOVES TO NO 1, AS SCORPIONS HOST BEARS
THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY stages a 31-heat feast of speedway on Sunday evening (5.30pm), with Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions hosting Redcar Bears in the SGB Championship, followed by the 500cc and 250cc classes of the re-staged second round of the British Youth Championship.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey is targeting Scorpions’ third successive home victory on Sunday.
He says: “Redcar won here by 46-44 back in April, so we’ll be looking to turn the tables on them this time, and keep our improved run of form going.
“Last weekend’s win over Berwick made it back-to-back home victories after the success against Sheffield prior to that. If we can make it three in a row against Redcar, we really will be moving in the right direction at long last.
“The Berwick meeting was not going according to plan to begin with, because the Bandits were challenging hard in the first half of the match. It was very frustrating, as we just didn’t seem able to get our noses in front, but I always felt we would come on strong later on and so it proved.
“Berwick deserved a point to be fair to them, and we can’t continue to throw points away like we did early in that match. We’ve got to be on it from the beginning, if we’re going to keep our winning record at home intact to the end of season, which is the aim.
“We have an extra 16 races on Sunday, with the cream of Britain’s youngsters taking to the track for the second round of the British Youth Championship at both 250cc and 500cc level. There are some great kids involved who have bright futures in the sport.”
The latest set of Green Sheet averages dictate a move to No 1 Lewis Kerr, while captain Michael Palm Toft moves to cover the tricky No 5 spot and Josh Auty shifts to No 3.
Godfrey states: “The move to No 1 is no more than Lewis Kerr’s performances deserve. He’s been consistently topping our scorechart over the last month or so.
“There was a bit of a scare when Lewis crashed out in Heat 9 last Sunday, and was unable to take any further part in the match. But thankfully he’s OK and should be fit to return.
“Our current line-up is not set in stone. Josh Auty was back to his brilliant best against Berwick, and we considered keeping him at No 5. But Redcar are lining-up Ben Barker at No 3, so we’re putting Josh up against him. We’ll judge it on a week-by-week basis.
“We’ve also got Josh Bailey coming back, after his time out to recover from his collarbone injury, and again that gives us more strength across the team.”
Sunday’s adult admission price for the double-header is £17. It’s just £2 more than a single SGB Championship meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway, for 16 extra heats of action. A full and exciting evening of racing is ahead. DON’T MISS IT!
