HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions have signed Finnish star Tero Aarnio – initially as temporary cover for broken collarbone victim Stefan Nielsen.

The 33-year-old is a Scorpions’ asset, having spent a previous spell at the Eddie Wright Raceway between 2010 and 2012. Until up now, he has been without a British club in 2017.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “I think Tero will be a cracking addition to our side.

“He was popular with the fans in his previous spell with Scorpions. He starts at reserve, and subject to BSPA approval, he will make his debut for Scorpions at home to Ipswich this coming Sunday (May 21). After that we have away meetings at Redcar and Newcastle – two tracks that Tero loves riding.

“He will start as temporary cover for Stefan Nielsen, who remains very much in our plans for this season, once he’s fit again.

“This is Tero’s chance to put himself in the shop window, and who knows what it may lead to.”

* DEPLETED Scorpions lost 40-50 to local rivals Sheffield Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway yesterday (Sunday). Full report to follow.
