Winter Series concludes

The last two weekends have seen the final two rounds of the Scunthorpe Speedway Winter Series take place at the Eddie Wright Raceway. With an additional two classes compared to previous years there were twelve series winners declared with only two riders retaining the titles they won a year ago. Skye Adams was one of those and posted a new fastest time in the flat track class and completed a clean sweep of all four completed winter rounds to retain her title whilst Harry McGurk could afford the luxury of missing the last round to pip Mickie Simpson, who did have the consolation of winning the meeting, by the narrowest of margins in the Youth 125/150 class and repeat his feat of twelve months ago.

The inaugural winners of the new classes were John Boddy in the Road Bike Class and Chris Wright in the Quad Bike Class whilst the headline grabbing Open Class, which once again attracted a large number of league racers, was won by King’s Lynn’s Ryan Kinsley from Jamie Halder and Liam Carr. However, on the day the stars of the show were Edinburgh Monarch’s new signing, Josh Pickering, who completed a 15-point maximum before rain prevented the running of the finals, and Kyle Bickley, who after seven years in the youth classes and eighteen class victories, was competing with adults riders for the first time and manged second place.

In the Upright Class Gary O’Hare went past Bickley’s record but winning nineteenth amateur meeting at Scunthorpe and his fifteenth in the Upright Class. However, after a long string of race wins going back to 2015 he was defeated in one of the qualifying rides by Lee Coleman who obtained his personal best race time (65.3) in the process whilst Coleman also secured the Winter Series title. Luke Gardner won his seventh Junior 110 class meeting to secure that Winter Series title ahead of Max McGurk and Henry Unsworth whilst Jack Bell continued his dominance of the pit bike class by winning for the fourth time in five meetings and securing the Winter Series from Lee Carter and Stuart Foster.

In the Support and Novice classes there was a distinctive Cumbrian influence with both winners on the day, Luke McKenna and Kieran Taylor, hailing from that neck of the woods. The overall Winter Series winners saw another Cumbrian, James Hitchen, claim the Support Class title whilst Tom Spencer was the Novice Class champion.

There was little activity in the remaining youth speedway classes but Jacob Clayton claimed the Youth 250 title and set a new personal best time of 64.67 whilst Carl Basford was declared the Youth 500 champion in his absence.

In total 164 riders took part over the 8 Winter Series meetings with four rounds unable to take place during January and February due to a frost damaged track. After the meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth paid tribute to all the riders and volunteers who make the Winter Series such a great success. “It was another fabulous winter of racing. The weather wouldn’t play ball for a while but we started well and finished stronglyl. Some years we can race all the way through, others the weather gets the better of us. It is the frosts that kill the track and we then need some winds to sort things out. However, we kept trying to get the meetings on and sooner or later it pays off.

Of course, I have to pay tribute to all the people who help us run the meetings. They are a godsend and without the meetings not only would the club struggle without the income but the sport in the country would be poorer for it. Not only do we give league riders the chance to have some competitive practice before the seasons starts but, more importantly, the progress made by riders between October and April can be massive.

Thankfully there are more opportunities for riders to race during the season but there is still a need for the amateur meetings and we have five scheduled for our Summer Championship which will be the tenth we have run. The first is Saturday 29th April and also incorporates the second running of the Upright Northern Riders’ Championship for speedway bikes with ‘old-style’ upright engines. Last year we had 14 entries and hopefully we will have more this year”.

The full list of Summer Championship meetings are Saturday 29th April, Saturday 3rd June, Saturday 1st July, Sunday 27th August & Sunday 8th October and will be split into two halves. In the first half (starting at 11am) will be the Open Class, Support Class, Quad Bike Class, Youth 500 Class, Youth 250 class, Road Bike Class and Flat Track Class. In the second half (starting between 2pm and 3pm) there will be the Novice Class, Upright Class, Youth 125/150 Class, Junior 110 Class and Pit Bike Class.
