Sunday saw Berwick Bandits’ Ryan Blacklock win the penultimate round of Scunthorpe Speedway’s Winter Series on a day when several riders from the SGB Championship and the National League were on show. Blacklock did it the hard way too by coming riding between fellow Championship riders Dan Bewley and Liam Carr at the end of the first lap of the ‘A’ Final who went on to fill the podium whilst Jamie Halder claimed some impressive scalps, including Blacklock and Bewley, along the way to complete the line-up for the final.

In total there were seventeen riders in the Open Class at a time of year when the class traditionally has a strong entry. In the Novice class there were twelve riders and it was Tom Spencer who, after a second and a third place in his first two meetings, claimed top spot with six flawless rides to head home Joe Alcock, Bartek Langner and Danny Wright in the ‘A’ Final.

Afterwards Spencer proclaimed “It was a pretty good day for me personally. I didn’t have any falls and felt in control all day on a very well prepared track. I recently took some advice from Gary O’Hare at a recent AMS training day which I felt helped me greatly with my racing. Previously at these meetings I’ve had a lot of trouble but now I feel I’m making the right steps.

I’d like to thank everyone who helps out with the running of the amateur meetings. It’s a really amazing thing that they are doing for us riders to help us progress. I’d also like to thank everyone behind the scenes at Scunthorpe who provide excellent training facilities all year round”.

Spencer now heads the Novice Class standings and only a win for Bartek Langner in the last round could prevent him from claiming the Winter Series title. However, two riders did secure the Winter Series titles with James Hitchen in the Support Class and Lee Coleman in the Upright Class winning for the second time to add to a second place in their other meetings of the winter. With the Upright Class entry down to just one rider after a late withdrawal the qualifying heats were combined with the Support Class but it didn’t stop Hitchen from winning all his five qualifying rides and heading home Alex Spooner, Sam Chapman and Luke Whitehead in the ‘A’ Final.

The final round of the series takes place on Sunday 19th March although a week earlier it is the final round for the other eight classes in the Winter Series. Bookings can be made by texting Richard Hollingsworth on 07832-402167.
