Last Sunday Scunthorpe Speedway’s Winter Series finally recommenced after two months off due to the festivities and frost damage to the track. An excellent turnout competed over seven classes and 60 races with class wins for Skye Adams (Flat Track), Wayne Carter (Pit Bikes), Eryk Borczuch (Youth 500), Jordan Palin (Youth 250), Mickie Simpson (Youth 125/150), Luke Gardner (Junior 110) and Scott Speed (Road Bikes).

For Jordan Palin it was an excellent way to celebrate his 13th birthday and after the meeting he declared “It was the best birthday ever as I put in some very fast times. I really enjoy the Scunthorpe meetings. They are very well run and each time I progress. I learnt my skills on the mini track and progressed the big track. Now I am on a 250 and I feel it is the right step for my career”.

Palin’s reference to fast times certainly was true as he and the youth 500 riders were constantly exchanging the fastest time of the day. In the end his best time was 63.24 seconds and was only bettered by youth 500 rider Eryk Borczuch in his last meeting in the class. Borczuch had a slow start to the day with just four points from his first three rides but three consecutive wins to finish the meeting ensured he pipped Anders Rowe, who only dropped one point in qualifying, to victory.

In the 125/150cc Mickie Simpson went through the card unbeaten to record his second class victory defeating nine-time winner Harry McGurk, his younger brother Sam and Corban Pavitt who hit Simpson’s back wheel in the final causing it to be stopped and the result awarded.

Skye Adams won her ninth flat track class to give her eleven class victories in total. She didn’t have it all her own way with Neil Martin winning four races but failing to start one race and having to settle for second overall. Adams’ eleven class wins leaves her behind just Kyle Bickley and Gary O’Hare who have 18 class victories and Jack Parkinson-Blackburn who has 17. The only other rider to win 10 classes is perennial Open Class Summer Champion Mirek Daniszewski who has exactly ten class wins to his name.

The Road Bike Class was very competitive with three different race winners but it was Scott Speed who followed in his brother’s footsteps (previous four-time class winner Odgie Danaan who has stepped up to the Flat Track class) to win whilst Wayne Carter was on top form in the pit bikes to demote his brother down to third place.

The youngest riders, as always, were in the Junior 110 class and whilst it was Luke Gardner who claimed his sixth victory some of the best racing came further back in the class with the youngest riders on the 50cc bikes.

After the meeting club promoter Rob Godfrey confirmed “The day went well. I don’t think anyone was seriously hurt, just a couple of bruised bodies. The track held up pretty well considering where it was at a week ago and it is just great to hear the bikes going round again. The winter activities are an important income stream for the club so the last two months have been very frustrating. Hopefully the serious frosts are all done now and we can keep active until the season starts now.

“I’d like to thank everyone who comes and supports the club at these meetings. That is the riders and the volunteers. Hopefully we’ll have a good turnout next week when the adult speedway riders have their meeting”.

Next Sunday’s meeting is for the Open, Support, Novice and Upright classes and anyone wanting to join in the fun has until 8pm Saturday to book in (text 07832-402167) whilst, as always, the club would love to hear from people who would like to help marshal the meeting on the day.
