SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS will open their 2017 season at the Eddie Wright Raceway with the visit of Peterborough Panthers on Sunday, April 2nd (5.30pm), in the brand new Speedway Great Britain (SGB) Championship.

The Scorpions are first in action at Peterborough’s East Of England Showground eight days beforehand in the corresponding away match.

All of Scunthorpe’s home meetings are scheduled for Sundays, expect for Bank Holiday Monday afternoon meetings on May 29th and August 28th. Double-header meetings are due to take place at the Eddie Wright Raceway on these two dates, plus Easter Sunday (April 16th) and Sunday, April 30th. The double-headers are set to begin at 3pm, while all single meetings are due to start at 5.30pm.

Sunday, April 30th is ‘Scunthorpe’s Super Sport Sunday’. Scunthorpe United FC are involved in their final fixture of the season at 12 noon, at home to Coventry, and the club, currently second in League One, could be celebrating promotion, if all goes to plan. Then the action switches to the Eddie Wright Raceway. At 3pm, Scorpions host Berwick Bandits in SGB Championship action, followed by the 150cc and 125cc classes of the British Youth Championship.

With the ten teams in the SGB Championship, and each meeting twice home and away, each club has 18 home and 18 away league fixtures this season, while Scunthorpe have received a bye in the first round of the Knockout Cup and have been drawn against the winners of Peterborough v Redcar in the second round.

Promoter Rob Godfrey is really looking forward to the season ahead.

He said: “I think it’s going to be a great season of racing in the SGB Championship, while the Peterborough meeting is a mouthwatering start to the season at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

“But every fixture looks an attractive one. You could put forward a case this season for each and every one of the ten clubs in the Championship reaching the play-offs.

“There’s much more continuity this season. We want the fans to get into the habit of coming to the Eddie Wright Raceway on a Sunday evening at 5.30pm. We’re running the vast majority of Sundays from the beginning of April to mid-September.

“We’ve put together what we believe is an entertaining and exciting team to watch, and I hope, like me, the supporters can’t wait for the season to start.”
