LAST Sunday (December 11th) saw the third meeting of the winter at Scunthorpe Speedway’s Eddie Wright Raceway take place with 65 races run over less than four and a half hours.

Eight classes were run with victories for Skye Adams (Flat Track), Jack Bell (Pit Bikes), Luke Woodhull (Youth 500), Jacob Clayton (Youth 250), Harry McGurk (Youth 125/150), Max McGurk (Junior 110), Odgie Danaan (Road Bikes) and Chris Wright (Quads/Trikes).

It was the second meeting of the winter for the classes with Adams, Bell, Wright and Harry McGurk all backing up their victories in November with one in December. For 13-year old Bell, who hails from Sleaford, it was his third victory in the last four meetings and afterwards he credited his choice of tyres.

“The track conditions were not the best for the pit bikes but my choice of tyres paid off in the end as I was able to get a lot more grip”, Bell said. “I always enjoy the battles with the older riders and the banter we have afterwards. The racing was fantastic as always”.

Meeting organiser Richard Hollingsworth added: “It’s hard to think Jack is only 13. He is such a mature lad and his riding reflects that. He is also making progress in the speedway 125 class but I think if he decides to switch to the 500s when he is old enough he will make even greater strides. He is quite a tall lad for the 125s and I think he will benefit from the extra power.

“We had Jacob Clayton have his first rides on a 250 today and he seemed to be much happier on the larger engine bike. He was riding on his own but by his last ride he had taken nearly eight seconds off his first race time. It is only right that riders have to wait until they are strong enough and skilled enough to handle the larger engine bikes but moving up is so often a watershed moment for riders who have perhaps struggled a little on the smaller engine bikes.

“I’d never encourage a rider to move up early because the skills learnt on the smaller engine bikes seem to be more worthwhile. However, when a rider is getting a little disillusioned, their transfer to another class or move up to race with the adults when they turn 15, has given them a new lease of life. I’d certainly urge riders not to worry about results, persevere with the sport and perhaps even spend more time on the mini track learning track craft rather than being obsessed with going faster and faster.

“Max Clegg is one of the best adverts for our mini track because whilst others were obsessed with racing he was learning skills that mean he will always be able to turn a bike no matter what the shape and size of the track.

“Anyhow, we had a great day today with the paramedic thankfully never having to attend a rider. When you run 65 races and can say that it is always nice. The conditions just meant riders had to think about their riding and not just open the throttle and hold on. Let’s hope the paramedic is equally inactive next week when the adults come out to play on their 500s”.

The meeting Hollingsworth referred to is on Sunday 18th December and is the last track action before the Christmas break. The Open, Support, Novice and Upright classes take to the track and with over 30 riders already booked in it has the makings of another great meeting. Anyone wanting to join in the fun has until 7pm Saturday to book in (text 07832-402167) and, as always, they would love to hear from people who want to help on the day for a couple of hours.
