Mirek makes it four
Jack Parkinson-Blackburn, Miroslaw Daniszewski and Eryk Borczuch – Open Class winners
Former Extraliga rider Miroslaw Daniszewski secured his fourth Open Class Summer Championship title last Sunday (25th September) after a great race with Jack Parkinson-Blackburn in the ‘A’ Final. Parkinson-Blackburn had won all five of his qualifying rides including two defeats of Daniszewski but the 50-year old wasn’t to be denied in the final. ‘JPB’ pushed the Pole all the way with another Pole, this time 18-year old Eryk Borczuch, claiming third place from Steve Jones.
In the Support Class Mick Skinner completed a clean sweep of the summer rounds before his proposed move up to the Open Class during the winter. He was followed home by Scunthorpe Stags’ riders Sam Chapman, Lloyd Ditchburn and Sheldon Davies in the ‘A’ Final.
The Novice Class was tight but it was Joe Alcock who recovered from a poor start to finish with four race wins whilst behind him in the ‘A’ final Danny Wright rode an excellent four laps to keep Bartek Langner in third place. In the Upright Class Gary O’Hare extended his winning streak to add a second Upright Summer Championship to the three he won in the Open Class, whilst 10-year old Sam McGurk saw off a strong challenge from Summer Champion Jordan Palin to win the Youth 125 class.
In the two newest classes the first summer champions were declared. Odgie Danaan saw off the challenge of Mike Johnson on the day and Archie Jeeves over the series to add to his trophy collection in the Road Bike class whilst in four-wheel action Mark Hooker won the round. However, even a third place finish in the ‘A’ final behind Hooker and Joe Hodgson couldn’t prevent Nick Wright from winning the Quad championship after he had won the first three rounds he had entered.
The highly competitive Flat Track class saw top qualifier Skye Adams have to settle for third behind Jon Bell and Craig Atkinson in the ‘A’ Final and she also missed out on the Summer Championship to Joe Burden by one point. The gradually expanding pit bike class was dominated by Jack Bell who won all six races ahead of Summer Champion Lee Carter and Lee’s brother Wayne whilst in the introductory Junior 110 class Summer Champion Luke Gardner missed out for once when a fall meant he had to settle for second on the day behind Teddy Wilkinson.
The meeting completed the ninth season of the summer championships at Scunthorpe with 179 riders competing over the five meetings whilst Sunday 13th November will mark the start of their ninth Winter Series. Twelve meetings are scheduled between mid-November and mid-March and organiser Richard Hollingsworth is already looking forward to them. “The beauty of the winter meetings from an organising point of view is that we’re not at the track all day. We’ve been here ten hours today and that takes its toll. In winter we split the classes and have the youth and non-speedway classes one weekend and then all the adult speedway classes on the next.
“It is just going to be interesting to see how the speedway classes stand up over the winter. There has been a drop in numbers over the summer but thankfully the non-speedway classes are building nicely. We’ve introduced two new classes during 2016, one for road bikes and another for quads. They have proven a success with the road bikes proving a relatively cheap class to race in. Then the flat trackers have had their strongest summer whilst the pit bikes seem to be another class that is gradually building. Let’s hope we have another winter that is kind to us with the weather and we can have a great series”.
The Winter Series meetings dates are 13th November, 11th December, 8th and 29th January, 19th February and 12th March for the youth and non-speedway classes plus 20th November, 18th December, 15th January, 5th and 26th February and 19th March for the adult speedway classes.
