Six become Summer Champions
After last Sunday’s penultimate round of the Scunthorpe Speedway Summer Championship six class champions can be declared. Mick Skinner in the Support Class, Gary O’Hare in the Upright Class and Luke Gardner in the Junior 110 Class all remained unbeaten through the championship with their fourth round wins whilst after some calculations it is possible to declare Andy Humphries (Novice Class), Lee Carter (Pit Bikes) and Jordan Palin (Youth 125/150) as uncatchable.
For O’Hare it is his second Upright Class Summer Championship to add to his three Open Class titles and the 2015/6 Winter Series title in the upright Class. As an ex-pro rider he returned to competitive racing in 2008 aged 45. Now eight years on he has not only become a convert to winter speedway but become an excellent ambassador for the upright class.
Skinner is another who seems to have taken to speedway at Scunthorpe and has followed up last winter’s Series triumph with a flawless display in the four rounds so far. He has declared his intention to move up to the Open Class over the winter.
The third rider to win all four summer rounds so far is Gardner and on the back of his successes the youngster has already started to compete with the adults in the flat track class and follow in the footsteps of impressive teenagers Skye Adams and Joe Burden.
Of the other winners Carter, whilst not dominant every round, has become the most consistent performer in the Pit Bike Class and his 2016 Summer Championship is his third series triumph in a row. Racing on his 44th birthday he was beaten in his first race on Sunday but won the remaining races to claim victory.
12-year old Palin wrapped up his first ever championship win after seeing off the ever-present challenge of the McGurk brothers, Harry and Sam whilst Rugby-based Humphries must be the unluckiest champion as he ended up in Scunthorpe hospital despite winning the round and the Novice Class championship. He had just been passed in the ‘A’ Final but the rider then fell in front of him and it was impossible to avoid a collision. With him being treated by the paramedic there was little choice but to declare the race with him as the winner and end the meeting one race early.
It was a disappointing end to a great day’s racing but a few days later Humphries was able update everyone on his progress. “I broke my tibia and the bone came through my shin to create a nice wound. There hasn’t been much pain at any point though and I can’t thank Scunthorpe hospital enough though. They were great. They operated on Monday and I came home on Wednesday. It’s going to be a twelve week recovery but it’s not going to stop me racing and I’m hoping to be back up to Scunny to pick up my trophy at the end of the month”
In the other classes Krystian Bialecki headed home Polish compatriot Mirek Daniszewski in the Open Class to be the only rider who can prevent him from winning his fourth Summer Championship. Sheldon Davies was the only Youth 500 rider but raced with the Support Class and acquitted himself well, finishing with his best ride and a second place in ‘A’ Final. The Flat Track Class saw the aforementioned teens Adams and Burden battle it out but a crash for Adams after finishing the fourth race meant she didn’t take to the track for her last ride and Burden was able to claim victory. In the quad bikes Nick Wright was utterly dominant in a highly competitive five bike class as he won from all grid positions and he is a strong favourite to become the first Summer Champion if he races in the final round.
Last but definitely not least is the Road Bike Class. After having its first run out at the end of February it has gone from strength to strength with a record ten bikes taking to the grid for this meeting. Odgie Danaan and Archie Jeeves have set the early pace in the class with Jeeves’ bike famously costing him just £70 (his race number). Along similar lines fourth places Darren Bright’s race number is the cost of his bike (£80 for the bike plus two tolls for a van on the Dartford Crossing) but it was John Boddy, who was returning from a long lay-off after a crash, who secured third place.
The final Summer Championship meeting at Scunthorpe is on Sunday 25th September and bookings can be made by texting Richard Hollingsworth on 07832-402167 or emailing him at richard@scunthorpespeedway.com. A full Winter Series will start in November and the dates can be found on the club website track calendar at http://scunthorpe-speedway.com/?page_id=73.
