JASON EDWARDS (250cc) and Dan Thompson (125cc) were the class winners in part two of the second round of the British Youth Championship at the Eddie Wright Raceway yesterday afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday).

The 500cc and 150cc classes were run on May Day Bank Holiday at the start of the month.

Yesterday’s 250cc class saw some particularly keen racing, due to the riders being well-matched in ability.

Leon Flint topped the qualifying scores on 11 points, with three wins, before being passed by Drew Kemp in his final ride.

In the first running of the final, Flint took the early lead. But, at the end of the first lap, Jolyon West locked up and fell heavily.

In the re-run, it was Jason Edwards who trapped ahead and claimed his first race win of the day ahead of Flint and Kemp.

In the 125cc class, Jordan Palin went through qualifying unbeaten.

He gave Joe Thompson his only defeat in heat 5 whilst, in turn, Joe was the only one to defeat his twin brother, Dan Thompson.

The fourth finalist was a little less clear with Mickie Simpson, Sam McGurk and local lad Luke Harrison all tying on 9 points and all looking impressive. Simpson qualified because he had two heat wins.

Simpson’s race with McGurk in heat 12 was one of the races of the day. With McGurk and Harrison being only 9 and 8 respectively, they are two names to watch out for in the years to come.

In the final, Palin missed the start and it was Dan Thompson who raced away to victory whilst Simpson held off Joe Thompson to claim second place.

All 26 races were held within 80 minutes.

The third round of the British Youth Championship takes place at King’s Lynn on Saturday,
June 11.
