HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions launch their new early evening start time of 6.30pm on Sundays, with the visit of the Peterborough Panthers to the Eddie Wright Raceway this week (April 10).

Promoter Rob Godfrey explained: “For the first couple of meetings in March, before the clocks had changed, we started on a Sunday at 3pm, simply because by starting at 6.30pm, it would have been too dark and cold. But the evenings are now ever expanding as we approach the summer.

“I think we’ve picked an ideal time in 6.30pm. We’re proud to have what we consider the best racetrack in the country, and we want it to stay that way. Starting at 6.30pm will allow us to keep the moisture in the track, to help enable top class racing.

“Plus everyone knows that we don’t mess around at Scunthorpe. We start on time and then get through the meeting at a decent pace. The main meeting is likely to be finished by 8pm or just after, allowing people plenty of time to get home.”

Scorpions have changed their regular race-night from Fridays to Sundays this season, after eight years of running on Fridays.

Godfrey added: “I had people coming up to me in town during the winter, telling me how they’d be coming along to the Eddie Wright Raceway again this year, because they can make it on a Sunday but couldn’t on a Friday.

“Fridays worked for us for a number of years, but the increasingly worse Friday night traffic was one factor in putting off some people.

“We’ll monitor how the 6.30pm Sunday evening start-time works this season, but I think it’s the right move”, he concluded.
