SPEEDWAY racing at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway begins its tenth successive season a week on Sunday (March 23rd) – the first track in the North Lincolnshire town to reach that milestone.

Speedway previously took place in Scunthorpe at Quibell Park for eight seasons (1971-1978) and Ashby Ville for seven seasons (1979-1985).

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: “I’m really looking to forward to our tenth season of racing at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

“There’s a lot to look forward to. I consider we have a very strong, very solid Premier League side – the FluidAir Power Scorpions should be in the hunt for some silverware this season. I would love to regain the Premier League title that we won in 2012.

“We will also have a team of young prospects in the Stags’ National League team – that’s going to be such an exciting team to watch.”

The action starts with the first round of the British Youth Championship on Sunday, March 23rd (3pm), with an adult admission price of just £5.

A week later, on Sunday March 30th, both the Scorpions (vs Sheffield) and the Stags (vs Kent) take to the track for the first time. It starts a run of Sunday afternoon double-headers at the circuit.

SCUNTHORPE PRICES STILL AMONGST CHEAPEST IN PREMIER LEAGUE

SCUNTHORPE will again boast one of the cheapest set of admission prices in the 2014 Premier League, despite a moderate increase on adult and concessionary prices, which both rise by £1. Child prices remain the same.

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We always try to put together a value-for-money package at Scunthorpe.

“We held admission prices in 2013. We need to make a slight increase this season, but I feel it’s still good value. We are still offering family tickets, so that it’s not too expensive for them.

“We’re also keeping the programme price pegged to £1, so that we have one of the cheapest overall packages.

“I recognise the need to entertain the public; we’ve done a lot of work on the track over the winter. I want people to come away from the Eddie Wright Raceway having been entertained and having had a good time. Our track is one of the very best, if not the best, in Britain – that’s something I am proud of.

“Our opening meetings are set to take place on Sunday afternoons and will be double-headers. £17 for 30 races is very good value – there’s probably not another track in the land who offers Premier or National League racing at a cheaper value per race.

“I think everyone knows by now that I plough all the money back into the stadium – I don’t go on holiday with it! I do have plans for a new building near the training track, and other improvements are also in the pipeline. I will always invest the money back into the stadium.”
