Strong finish for Winter Series
Scunthorpe Speedway’s Winter Series fifth and final round took place on Saturday with 65 riders completing 97 races. It means the increasingly popular series had totalled 296 races over the final three rounds with a wide range of league racers taking the opportunity to get some race laps under their belt before the season started. Although Richie Worrall, Steve Worrall, Matt Williamson and Brendan Johnson were amongst the riders who dropped out of the finals there was still a high quality field in the ‘A’ Final in which Leicester and Cradley Heath’s Tom Perry defeated Peterborough and Coventry’s Ollie Greenwood, Cradley Heath’s Danny Phillips and Kent’s Luke Chessell.
Greenwood captured the Winter Series Championship for the second year running ahead of Phillips and Arron Mogridge whilst the other eight class winners on the day were Alex Wilson (Support), Dan Miles (Novice), Jack Parkinson-Blackburn (Youth 500), Ben Woodhull (Youth 250), Kyle Bickley (Youth 125), Bailey Fellows (Juniors), Daniel Skipworth (Pit Bikes) and Tim Greig (Flat Track).
After the meeting organiser, and Scunthorpe Stags Chairman Richard Hollingsworth heralded the meeting a great success. “To be honest the weather caught us out a bit. We had fog beforehand and the track was great but then it turned out like a summer’s day and the moisture just disappeared. However, we completed 97 races without too much incident and there was some great racing. It is wonderful to see riders progressing in these meetings and we have some great prospects for the future and I’m looking forward to seeing some of them wearing a Stags jacket in the National League before the end of the month.
“This also means that we’ve managed to complete all five rounds of our Winter Series once again and next November we will be back for our seventh year. Now it’s on to the seventh running of our Summer Championship which starts on 5th April. As always I’d like to thank the wonderful volunteers who help run these meetings. Their efforts really do contribute to the success of the club and our ability to run the Scorpions in the Premier League”.
