Premier League Champion wins Scunthorpe meeting

With four highly competitive classes the meeting produced some of the best amateur racing seen at the track with many races won from the back. In the Support Class it was Mick Skinner who won the final from Chris Bambury, Sam Chapman and Milosz Chojnacki whilst in the Novice Class it was James Hitchen who triumped ahead of Jake Isherwood, Chris Hay and Ryan Burton.
The fourth class saw former professional rider Gary O’Hare claim six heats wins to triumph ahead of Lee Coleman, Ed Gooch and Shaun Bickley in the Upright Class. O’Hare, who turned 52 in September, has claimed victory in the last seven meetings for the class aimed at the upright style engines that dominated the sport until the early nineties. After the meeting club promoter paid tribute to the veteran. “Gary is a great ambassador for our amateur meetings. He won the Summer Championship three times in his late forties and now has switched to the upright class. The class only started a year ago but he is determined to support it and see it flourish. Numbers are gradually increasing and it’s nice to see some younger riders racing in the class too.
I couldn’t believe the quality of the racing we had today. The touch of frost created a little bit of dirt when it thawed and conditions were near perfect. Normally there is only a bit of passing in amateur meetings after the first half a lap but today there were some amazing races. The winter classes are so strong with Premier League and National League riders keeping sharp and so many development league riders also filling out the classes. Our next meeting is the Christmas Cracker Short Track meeting with pit bikes and youth classes on 27th December and then the week after, on January 3rd, we’ve got our New Year Classic meeting for the adult speedway classes.
