FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions suffered a heavy 22-67 defeat at Newcastle’s Brough Park last night (Sunday), bringing a run of three successive wins for the team to a very sudden halt.

In-form Danish reserve Thomas Jorgensen suffered a suspected broken scaphoid, sustained in the first attempt to stage Heat 8. Jorgensen took another two rides before the injury became apparent.

In addition, Ryan Douglas and Josh Auty also finished the meeting battered and bruised. Both were left with knee injuries, although they seem to have avoided any breaks.

The Scorpions were never in the hunt, with the Diamonds in the mood for revenge after a 38-58 defeat at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday.

Jorgensen won Heat 2, but David Howe’s win in the re-run of Heat 8 was the next time a Scorpion finished ahead of an opposing rider. By then, Scunthorpe had unsuccessfully used up both tactical ride options.

Howe and Jorgensen were the only Scorpions to finish ahead of a Newcastle rider.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We’ve just got to put this meeting behind us. It was one of those nights. We don’t turn into a bad team overnight.

“You’re only as good as your last meeting. After Friday, the riders were heroes. Now they’re zeroes. Next Friday, when we’re at home to Sheffield, they could well be heroes again.

“We’ll wait and see how Thomas Jorgensen is. At the moment, there’s a lot of swelling. That will need to go down, before anyone can see whether the scaphoid is broken or not.”
