Tai: “I never lost belief”
SCUNTHORPE-BORN Tai Woffinden insists he never lost belief during his early season lack of form.
The reigning world champion bounced back in spectacular style with a stunning display to top the scorecharts in Finland on Saturday where he finished runner-up in the Mitas Finnish FIM Speedway Grand Prix.
Now he’s looking forward with optimism to the rest of the series with nine rounds to go.
He said: “I’m really pleased about it all and really think I have something to build on from here.
“I’m not going to say what has changed or anything like that, I’m just pleased I’m back to something like my best.
“Yes, I was feeling down after Bydgoszcz, but I never had any doubt in my own ability. How could I be so good last season, win the world title and then become this bad? I knew I had the ability and that’s what kept me going.
“I knew things were better in the build-up to Finland because I was riding well in the leagues in Poland, Sweden and England – and thankfully I was able to keep it going.”
Woffinden has also congratulated Matej Zagar on his first GP success after he took advantage of a slip from the champion.
“Congratuations to Matej, that’s a big thing for him,” said Woffinden. “I was feeling comfortable in front and then I locked up too much and the priority then was to get the bike back under control.
“I saw what was happening, I read the situation and I knew he was going to pass me and there was nothing I could do about it!
“But I finished top scorer and my season starts now!”
