GLASGOW TIGERS 55 SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 37 (SGB CHAMPIONSHIP)

HENDERSON INSURANCE Scunthorpe Scorpions suffered a 37-55 defeat at Glasgow last night (Saturday) – but team manager Dave Peet believes his side can beat the Edinburgh Monarchs at the Eddie Wright Raceway later today (Sunday, 5.30pm).

Scorpions were without two key personnel last night. Josh Auty was missing with a shoulder injury sustained at Wolverhampton on Monday, while reserve Tero Aarnio was over in his native Finland, where unfortunately the Finnish Championship was rained off. The absence of Aarnio particularly hit Scorpions, as a suitable guest was not available.

Both Auty and Aarnio are due back this afternoon against Monarchs.

Scorpions went down early on at Ashfield, but kept on battling and took points off all the top Tigers.

Lewis Kerr defeated all three of the Glasgow heat-leaders and top scored for Scorpions on 12 points. Meanwhile, recent signing Jake Allen took a while to get going on his return from a wrist injury, but then rode a brilliant race to beat the previously unbeaten Aaron Summers in Heat 11.

Peet said: “I think we rode better than the final scoreline at Glasgow suggests. Our riders were certainly popping out and winning a race. Lewis Kerr, Ryan Douglas and Michael Palm Toft all had a decent evening.

“Jake Allen needed this meeting to dial himself back in, after his injury. But he then produced a great ride in Heat 11. He started off the outside, went flying around everyone on the opening turns, and then Aaron Summers chased him, but Jake held him off.

“We certainly missed our missing riders, and we’ll be all the stronger against Edinburgh at the EWR later today (Sunday, 5.30pm).

“I think we stand a great chance of overturning the Monarchs. They came away from Berwick without any points last night, and are desperate for points to grab the last play-off place. Edinburgh are going to be under pressure, while we can simply focus on winning the meeting.”
