Amateur Meeting results for 3rd June

Despite no entries in the Open Class the second of Scunthorpe Speedway’s Summer Championship amateur meetings saw 75 entrants compete over 77 races. The meeting, which took place on Saturday 3rd June, had ten classes covering adult and junior speedway, flat track/MX, road bikes, pit bikes and quad bikes. The top adult speedway class on the day saw 15-year old Daniel Gilkes complete a five-ride maximum less than two weeks after he became eligible to ride with the adults whilst at the other end of the scale there were also maximums for 53-year old Gary O’Hare (Upright Class) and 44-year old David Pye (Novice Class).

Whilst O’Hare was claiming his twenty-first class victory (a record at Scunthorpe) it was Pye’s second class win and nearly seven years after he claimed his first in August 2010. Afterwards the Middlesbrough-based rider declared “I’ve had a couple of goes at the sport stretching back nearly twenty years but I’ve been a mechanic for Havvy (Gary Havelock) and my good friend Wilko (Carl Wilkinson, who rides for the Scunthorpe Scorpions) and it is Wilko who gave me the desire to ride again and I’m really loving it.

“I’m going to keep pushing myself slowly and see where it takes me. I am a believer that age is just a number so if you can ride then ride. This series gives people like me the chance to race and I’d like to thank everyone involved in running them. It’s hard work but it is much appreciated”.

In the youth speedway classes it was Jordan Palin (250cc) and Harry McGurk (125/150cc) who claimed victory whilst Chris Wright won the Quad Class. There was a strong turn out in the other non-speedway classes with Wayne Carter heading the 15-strong pit bike class, Richard Rowden topping the 12 flat trackers, Scott Speed the 8 inappropriate bikes and Max McGurk the 7 junior 110cc riders.
