IT’S BEEN a while since we really banged the drum regarding the fantastic mini-track facility at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway.

The 92-metre circuit was constructed in 2007, and is open to any prospective riders of ANY age, who would like to have a first go at riding a speedway bike.

We know, from listening from terrace talk, that a few of you reckon that maybe you could handle a speedway bike. Or maybe it’s not quite as easy as it looks? Why not come and find out and get an adrenalin rush at the same time?

Former Scorpions skipper Wayne Carter hosts regular sessions at weekends, with Scunthorpe Speedway owner Rob Godfrey enthusing: “It is a great experience and a great introduction to speedway and we want to see it in greater use.

“I could go through a whole list of riders who started on our mini-track. Ashley Birks, Josh Bates, the Worrall twins, Max Clegg, current Scorpions’ No 7 Josh Bailey – you name them and they started off at Scunthorpe on our mini-track.

“Primarily Wayne Carter does experience days, when you come and rent the bikes. He organizes all your gear and equipment, gives you tuition and basically gets you sliding.

“You get the experience of riding a smaller bike on a smaller track and it’s been hugely successful.

“It’s a great facility, but recently it’s been a bit under-used, and we want to remind people it’s still there.

“It’s usually on Sundays for rookie riders who fancy hiring out a bike to try speedway out. In the main, the mini-track doesn’t run without Wayne, but if you’re experienced and want to rent it out or a few hours, that’s an option too.

“We also have gift vouchers to buy someone the experience as a birthday or Christmas present”, Godfrey added.

The details:

Scunthorpe Speedway’s 92-metre mini-track was built inside the stadium grounds in the summer of 2007 and has proven to be an extremely popular addition.

Its size makes it ideal for the smaller-engined bikes (e.g. 125-150cc) and is an excellent introduction to art of sliding. Already riders have progressed to the British Under-15 championships and the club’s amateur meetings, whilst many other users are fans of all ages and abilities, and from all over the country, who want to experience the sport in relative safety.

There are a variety of ways to ride the mini-track suitable for all ages and abilities.

Wayne Carter Training Sessions

The price of the sessions is £70 and includes tuition, bike use and equipment hire (helmet, boots, clothing) or £25 for riders with their own bikes.
